How can a poem be scary?

How can a poem be scary?
It’s just a bunch of words
Unless you’re reading them
Alone
In a desolate house
Under furious skies
Darkened by nature’s wrath
And your only light
Is a fading candle
About to take its last breath
As you hear strange noises
That defy reality
The light grows fainter
As you hear the presence
Of something behind you
