Making your computer run faster.

Even though I’ve been out of work it’s still refreshing to see my computer expertise still in demand. My mother-in-law recently asked me to check out her laptop and see what I could do to make it run faster. I wasted no time taking to the Internet to retrieve the very programs that would help me accomplish this task.
The first program I downloaded was CCleaner, which does wonders in clearing the browser cache, cookies and other temporary files. As this program was never before run on the laptop it cleared up well over a gigabyte of disk space. But I wasn’t done.
Next I installed the free registry defrag utility to optimize the system registry. Upon analysis the utility determined the registry was heavily fragmented and in dire need of optimization.
Then I ran PureRa to clean some other temporary files missed by CCleaner, files such as thumbs.db, iconcache.db and other such files that tend to clutter up the hard drive. I wanted to clear as many temporary files as I could before going on to the last step.
Finally I ran the MyDefrag utility to defragment the files on the hard disk. I prefer this utility over the defragmenter included with Windows because it’s much faster and does a better job optimizing the files on the hard disk.
The next day I got an e-mail from my mother-in-law telling me that her laptop was running much faster. Needless to say, she was very pleased.
Mission accomplished.
