The duckling that made it.

Three months ago I saw this cute little duckling while walking past the fountain to the building where I work.

Earlier that week I had seen a whole batch of ducklings but over time they disappeared, leaving this one the sole survivor. I began to hope that it would defy the odds of survival and reach adulthood. That it did. Here’s the same duckling, three months later.

It’s amazing how fast it’s grown in three months. During this time, I witnessed its transformation to a tiny duckling to the full-sized duck it is now. As it got larger it took its first brave steps in the water and now spends more time swimming there than the other ducks who live around the fountain. As large as it is now, it still stays near its mother. After all, a mother’s job is never done.

They are never far from each other and still spend their time together. The two have developed a special bond that will never break.

I have a feeling that in another three months I won’t even tell the young duck apart from the other adults as it approaches adulthood. I will definitely post an update then.

Catching up with the duckling.

It’s been two months since I first saw that tiny duckling during my morning walk to work and since then it’s really grown. There is no longer any wondering whether it’s going to make it. Whatever tricks and strategies the mama duck used to ensure the survival of her offspring worked. This duckling appears to be well on its way to adulthood.

During my lunch break I went outside to check on the ducks and watched as the duckling embark on a solo trek across the water.

It wasn’t long before the mama duck joined in.

We’ll leave these two be and check back with them another time.

The duckling of hope.

Every day this week I’ve been seeing this mother duck and her duckling wandering around outside the corporate park where I work. Sadly, this duckling is the last one still alive from the nest that once bore a whole batch of ducklings. Over time they disappeared, presumably to nocturnal predators, but this one tough duckling seems to be capable of hanging on to survive another day. That means I too am capable of hanging on to survive another day, which is just the wisdom I need to start the day off right.

I really hope this duckling makes it.
